Supporting contemporary art in Hungary: OFF-Biennale
OFF-Biennale Budapest is an internationally renowned independent art initiative, currently the largest contemporary arts event in Hungary. We decided to offer web design, development and IT support for the team in 2015. The program includes a series of exhibitions and workshops that take place offline, but the online presence plays an important role in reaching out to biennale’s audience. With the pandemic the organizers face new challenges: adapting programs to the online space.
The founders wanted to create a platform that would bring the representatives of contemporary art (artists, curators, art professionals, etc.) closer to the public. OFF’s mission is to make the independent contemporary arts scene stronger and to initiate public discourse about urgent yet neglected social, political and environmental issues. OFF is a constant experiment that realizes the vision of a sustainable and democratic institution in the civil sphere.
In the spring of 2015, the first OFF-Biennale Budapest presented a little short of 200 programmes at more than 100 venues over the course of 5 weeks (mainly in Budapest, but also in rural towns and abroad), featuring more than 350 artists from 22 countries. The “garage biennale” has worked its way up to becoming an internationally acclaimed event over a few years.
OFF-Biennale Budapest is the largest contemporary arts event in Hungary. It began as a “garage biennale” and has worked its way up to becoming an internationally acclaimed event over a few years. It was launched in 2014 as a grassroots initiative brought to life by a small team of art professionals. They wanted to create a platform that would bring the representatives of contemporary art (artists, curators, art professionals, etc.) closer to the public.
